THE Port Moresby Racquets Club held its first junior tennis tournament of the year last the weekend with an aim to prepare children for upcoming tournaments.
The HCMS junior Easter tournament had four age groups competing in the two-day singles event which ended with the presentation of medals last Sunday.
Tennis director and Papua New Guinea international Abigail Tere-Apisah told The National that the tournament was successful with a lot of excitement among children.
“We had the Under-eight, U10, U14 and U18 mixed singles,” she said. “Because it’s the first tournament in almost a year, I wanted it to be a fun one. Since it was Easter, we also had other activities.
“The children took part in egg painting, an Easter egg hunt and other games.
“It was also a good way for the children to get back to the swing of things because we do have a big line-up of tournaments for this year.
“Overall, I think it was a successful tournament. The children were excited to resume tennis. I’d like to thank our major sponsors, HCMS.”
Results: U8 mixed singles – winner Mika Tabuchi, runner-up Elijah Mera; U10 mixed singles – winner Ethan Kriebisch, runner-up Timonaliz Kriebisch; U14 mixed singles – winner Coleta Hakena, runner-up Micheal Kapolis; U18 mixed singles – winner Sugar-Ray Hakena, runner-up Christopher Kaiulo.
