COACH Seth Rip says he is keen to steer the Hela Wigmen club to finals in this year’s Digicel Cup.
The 52-year-old told The National last week that he was eyeing a premiership title.
Rip joined the club in 2017 and has been involved in Wigmen’s coaching team. “I’ve been with the club for over four years and this role is not new to me,” he said.
The Hela native is focused on establishing a good combination in the spine.
“We had a problem with our attack last year despite having good players,” he said.
“At the moment, we’re working to improve on that.” He believes the return of playmaker Solomon Pokare could be the answer to their problem.
Rip said the former Hunter would likely pair up with Tony Wemin in the halves, with another former Hunter Patrick Morea at No.9 in opening round of the Digicel Cup.
“Solomon joining the camp is a boost for the squad,” he said.
“He was part of the team that were premiers in 2020 and we’re glad to have him back.”
With the Rugby League World Cup approaching, Rip urged players to remain focused and be consistent with their performance throughout the season.
“I told the boys to play with purpose,” he said.
“If they wish to secure a sport in the Hunters or the Kumuls they have to earn it.”
The Kroton-sponsored side will play their season opener against the Goroka Lahanis on April 24 at the Minj rugby league oval in Jiwaka.
