Coach pushes team

PORT Moresby Vipers coach Leonard Tarum has urged his men to create their own legacy by stamping their mark in the Digicel Cup finals at Sir John Guise Stadium.
Tarum told The National ahead of Sunday’s semifinal against the Hela Wigmen that despite the club’s rich history, the current team should continue to aim high and be consistent like the Lae Tigers.
The 2013 premiership winner said his side had the experience to go all the way and win the Oct 18 grand final.
“The club has a rich history and our former players have left a legacy,” Tarum said.
“The last time we won the premiership was in 2013.
“Our current group of players are new except for Enoch Maki who was part of our 2013 premiership-winning team.
“These players have to write their own legacy, we’ve been telling them and they know it.
“I think they’ve embraced the challenge and are excited about the finals.
“They are keeping it simple and aiming high which is great.”
Tarum said they were wary of last year’s runners-up Wigmen.
“The Wigmen are a top side who have been playing well,” he said. “For us, we have to maintain our defence.
“The only improvement needed is our attack.”
For the Wigmen, the only change made by coach Charlie Wabo is second-rower Atua Joshua who replaces Junior Jeff Mel.
The former Papua New Guinea Kumuls rake highlighted last week that they needed to improve on their ball security and kicking.
The winner of the match will book a date with the losers of the Tigers-Rabaul Gurias clash next Sunday.
