COACH Francis Ray has challenged his Rabaul Gurias to live up to their reputation of being regular Digicel Cup finalists by going deep into the playoffs and possibly winning the premiership.
“The Gurias have reached the finals every season, so we’re looking to continuing that record,” he told The National last month.
“We started the season well, knowing that we had the task of reaching the finals.
“We have to continue believing in ourselves.”
Ray said big victories against Kimbe Cutters (48-18) and Mt Hagen Eagles (56-16) over the last two rounds were a result of continued improvements to their attack and defence.
“But we all know that the finals are always tough. That’s why need to continue improving,” the former forward said.
“We need to complete our sets and be clinical in attack.
“We can ill-afford to be complacent.
“The atmosphere of finals football is different from that of the regular season.
“The pressure is there.
“But we’ll have to be consistent and take it one game at a time.
“That’s our focus and we’re aware of it.”
Papua New Guinea Kumuls and Mt Hagen Eagles legend Ray hailed the efforts and concentration of his players, who boast the best attack in the 12-team competition.
“My focus is all on the Gurias as their head coach,” the former forward said.
“I’m grateful to everyone who continues to support us.
“Our players should be commended for their contributions towards getting us this far in our campaign.”
