A NEW coconut project focusing on white copra has been introduced to the farmers in East New Britain (ENB) with the aim to the boost local economy.
The product introduced by Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) has seen the organisation run training sessions for locals on processing coupled with other initiatives to boost the coconut industry.
KIK’s work had seen the provincial government make a commitment to strengthen the coconut industry and promoting agriculture by supporting and encouraging farmers to go back to the land.
The ENB government held a special meeting recently at the Gunan Na Niuvia building attended by the members of the provincial executive council, local level government managers and presidents, Department of Primary Industries officers, district development officers and the KIK team.
The KIK team gave a presentation on the coconut industry and its economic benefits as well as the project and a strategic plan for copra.
KIK acting managing director Alan Aku said coconut could do a lot for the people, economy, community and the province.
“Coconut is the second biggest cash crop in the country. We had this commodity for many years want to give the people alternatives on what coconut can give them.”
