Coffee sector eyes increased output

 THE coffee industry is expected to see increased production now with government support in freight security, rehabilitation and price.

Speaking at the launching of the new policy initiatives in Eastern Highlands recently, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill stressed the government’s plans to revitalise the industry.

Last year, a number of reforms were undertaken by the government in priority areas such as agriculture.

The reforms included a review of all commodity boards, including the coffee industry corporation (CIC), the establishment of a stabilisation fund and introduction of subsidies.

He said the government aimed to help coffee growers to increase production that would increase export volume. 

O’Neill said: “The coffee industry as we all know is a major contributor to national income and employment. 

“About three million people depend either directly or indirectly on coffee for their social, economic and food security.
