Ash day
You may notice some people today with a cross on their forehead painted in ash. Don’t panic. It’s not a cult movement. It is Ash Wednesday – a holy day of prayer and fasting for Christians. It also marks the beginning of Lent. Lent commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert before beginning his public ministry. He overcame the Devil’s temptations while fasting.
Time to fast
Do not be alarmed if you notice some friends depriving themselves of certain food and drinks in the next six weeks leading up to Easter. Christians, in particular Catholics, have to fast and abstain from green nuts, cigarettes and yes, beer. Among other things.
Double risk
A Route 13 PMV driver who was speeding along Boroko Drive in Port Moresby almost ran into other vehicles during the morning peak hour. He yelled out through his window to other drivers that he was rushing to get children to school on time.
Long queue
One mobile service provider always boasts about its network being the fastest and best. Last week, customers who turned up at its retail shop in Waigani to buy SIMs were told they could not do so right away. They have to wait for a “call” from the company. Fastest and best service?
Thought for today
Don’t mistake silence for weakness. Smart people don’t plan big moves out loud.

“Police officers put their lives at risk every day when they put their uniform on. I appeal to the people to look beyond the uniform – that officer is someone’s daughter, son, dad, mum, brother, sister, husband or wife.” – Police Comm David Manning
