Column 1

Us first
Almost funny how MPs last week quickly sneaked in that 5 per cent increase to their retirement benefits “on voices” without much debate and zilch dissent. It’s a case of us first, others later.
Last session
When the 111 writs are issued next month to set in motion the 2022 general election process, one thing we can be sure of is that not all MPs attending the final sessions of Parliament know that they will not come back.
Name vanishes
The name of the good government spelt out in flowers on a small grassy slope near the Erima roundabout in Port Moresby has disappeared. Clearly someone had forgotten to pull out the overgrown weeds.
Sperm count
The Covid-19 may reduce sperm counts, making it harder to conceive a baby, according to a new peer-reviewed study, published in the UK Fertility and Sterility journal. Stay healthy, folks.
PCR test
The cost of getting a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for Covid-19 is K500-plus. Not many ordinary citizens can afford that. It should be free to encourage more people to take it so that we have a fair idea how widespread is the pandemic in this nation. WHO or UN?
Lonely push
The dramatic picture of a Ukraine man trying to push back a heavy Russian tank by himself sums up the story of his nation’s fight for sovereignty and freedom.
Today’s thought
There are four very important words in life: love, honesty, truth, respect. Without those in your life, you have nothing.
Top quote
“Parliament has ensured that the law is strong and that men who abuse our women and girls whether through sorcery or through abuse should face the full brunt of the law.” – PM James Marape.
