First call
On April 3, 1973, the world’s first mobile phone call was made. Martin Copper, a senior Motorola engineer, called a rival telecom company and informed then that he was speaking via a mobile phone. History for you!
Big enrolments
Two neighbouring schools in Port Moresby are bracing themselves for huge enrolments – one around 3,000 and the other 1,600. A herculean task to manage that number of children all year, obviously.
No fees
The education department, though without a permanent office yet, expects all to obey its directive regarding school and projects fees. Be warned!
Sunshine galore
We have lots of sunshine – someone calls it a Vitamin D overdose – yet still hesitate to use solar power and rather opt for PNG Power-generated electricity. Does not make sense.
Eye-balling
There are some serious eye-balling sessions going on behind the scene as regards the long-awaited much-anticipated reopening of the multi-billion kina Porgera mine. No light at end of tunnel yet.
Not Maths
Many of us are with this reader: “For me, Maths class is like watching a Chinese movie with no subtitles.”
Corruption galore
Those following the political developments in one of our fellow Melanesian nations will be shocked as them at the amount of corruption in the past 16 years exposed by the new government. A State radio station CEO was paid the equivalent of K50,000 a month. Wow!
Thought for today
Never be ashamed of the type of work you do. A small salary is better than waiting for someone to give you money
Best quote
“A university is a community that is dedicated to learning where students will become mature professionals who will venture into the world and contribute to the development of this nation.” – University of PNG Vice-Chancellor Professor Frank Griffin.
