AS the eyes of the world turn to Rio for the Olympic Games, we wish our eight athletes best of luck as they fly the PNG flag in their respective competitions.

BUT the excitement of participating in such world event is an experience one will keep forever. We remember our participation at the 2000 Olympic Games also but not as an athlete but as a sports journalist covering the games for The National. The experience is definitely lifetime.

EVERY four years, the Olympic Torch begins its journey to the host city from Olympia, Greece. The torch’s flame symbolises Prometheus stealing fire from Zeus, and it’s lit with a parabolic mirror so as to align with Ancient Greek technology. Nothing could harken back to Greek Antiquity better than a famous Greek myth made real, but the Olympic Torch is
not an ancient tradition. The IOC only started
lighting symbolic fires in 1928, and the torch made its debut in 1936 Berlin Games. You know, the
games that were hosted by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany.

WHY do drivers speed and zigzag between cars. No matter how skilful a driver you maybe, the laws of physics do not change, the faster you driver the harder you hit. Speeding is easy but stopping is not.

IT is high time also road authorities once again emphasis what is the speed limit within the city and outside. The posted speed limit is supposed to be the maximum recommended speed for ideal conditions, that is, dry road, good visibility etc. Remember, it is not a target speed that you must reach.

THE Greenwich Foot Tunnel is a pedestrian tunnel beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich with the Isle of Dogs. Opened in 1902, the tunnel replaced an occasionally unreliable ferry service and was intended to allow workers living on the south side of the Thames to reach their workplaces in the London docks and shipyards.
