Commission adjusting teachers’ pay rates

THE Teaching Service Commission is adjusting the pay rates of teachers who will see some “fluctuations” in what they receive, says chairman Baran Sori.
He was responding to complaints by some teachers that they had noticed deductions in their pay.
“The TCS is adjusting the pay rates for 2017-2018 and teachers will likely experience pay fluctuation,” he said.
The commission and the PNG Teachers’ Association will meet tomorrow to discuss the matter. Sori urged the 56,000 teachers to be patient and allow the TSC to sort the matter out.
Some teachers in the National Capital District claim that they had noticed deductions in the past three pays.
A teacher from Kilakila Secondary School called it unfair and uncalled for. He said teachers had valid reasons for missing classes at times which they made up for later.
“Some of us teachers have been living in the settlement for years but are still faithfully doing our duties,” he said.
“Most of the teachers live far from the schools they are teaching in and every day they spend money on bus fare. With the high cost of living in the city teachers struggle each day to survive.”
Five teachers at the Gordon Secondary School told The National that they noticed the pay deductions and did not know why. One female teacher said they were entitled to receive full pay.
