NATIONAL Cultural Commission acting executive director Steven Kilanda and members of his executive management visited one of the biggest and oldest schools in Port Moresby, Ted Diro Primary School yesterday.
The purpose of the visit was to help with the school’s preparation for the Independence Day celebrations which start on Sept 12.
Kilanda donated K5,000 for the school’s cultural festival and K2,000 for traditional costumes.
He also invited the school to actively pursue cultural education and engage other schools in debate and schools quizzes and competitions.
“Culture is our foundation, our identity,” he said.
“It defines who we are. We must encourage it at the schools in order for our young people to appreciate and promote and preserve their heritage.”
School principal Ms Hane Charlie said although most of her students were born and raised in the city, there was still a strong link to their cultural roots.
Named after the first commander of the PNG Defence Force, the school is located within Murray Barracks with a student population of 2,700.
