Commission eyes ban on foreign labels

THE Independent Consumer and Competition Commission plans to again impose a ban on the import of products which have labels in languages other than English.
Chief Commissioner Paulus Ain told The National yesterday that the emphasis was on companies operating in the country which imported products which had foreign-language labels.
“We had imposed a ban on products that had their labels in foreign language which lapsed in September last year,” he said.
“We have to go through the normal process of consultation and to have it imposed again.
“We are in the final stage now.
“We will soon issue a gazettal notice to businesshouses on a temporary ban on all non-English label products from being imported and sold in the country.”
Ain said the commission was assisting the Health Department on the issue.
“Products that has their labels written in non-English language will be banned from the country for another six months,” he said.
“We will do the second ban and if it continues, we will proceed onto a permanent ban.
“We are informing all businesshouses to comply.
“We will not hesitate to take them to court.”
