ABOUT K37 million is needed to effectively address gender-based violence starting next year till 2026, according to the Special Parliamentary Committee on Gender-Based Violence.
The committee was responding to The National on the funding request made to the Treasury Department and how the proposed funding would be used.
The committee said the proposed requests of K37 million would be used over a five-year period (2022-2026) .
“That funding will be used to support the provincial rollout of the National GBV Strategy, including supporting provincial GBV secretariats,” it said.
“It would also support non-government organisations who are working on GBV prevention and crisis response, including support for more safe houses around the country, better access to counselling services and more work on GBV prevention and education.”
The committee said that the Department of Community Development, Youth and Religion which was responsible for the coordination and implementation of the National GBV strategy and setting up the National GBV secretariat, came up with the budget and submitted it to the Treasury Department.
