BOWLS PNG staged a two-day training camp in Lae last week, selecting 14 players (seven men and women) to represent Papua New Guinea at the 2014 commonwealth games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 14 players, whose names are yet to be released, were among 24 bowlers from Mt Hagen, Goroka, Madang, Port Moresby, Bulolo and Lae who attended the training camp that was held the at the Lae Bowls Club.

Bowls PNG secretary and national coach for both men and women William Stevens said the 14 players would be advised through their respective clubs after the national bowls body vets the list.

He said the team would go through four training sessions, two in-country and two in Cairns, Australia, in March and June as preparations for the Commonwealth Games and also the 2015 Pacific Games.

Stevens said PNG would be medal contenders in Glasgow and it was important that every aspect of selection and preparation was carried out professionally and with due diligence.

“Training brings out the best and recent training has highlighted that we have great natural ability however the key areas that need to be improved are technique, skills and mental approach to be competitive against the world’s best,” Stevens said. He added that despite the travel and accommodation covered by the PNG Olympic Committee there was still a need for corporate support for the team.
