PEOPLE from Rofundogum in Sausso, Yangoru-Saussia, East Sepik, are set to benefit from a water project under Water Sanitation and Hygiene (Wash) programme of the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (Unicef).
Local MP Richard Maru gave K100,000 yesterday to village leaders to start the project.
This follows an initial funding of K300,000 released by the district development authority to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency to build the system.
He said the project would ensure water was piped to the village and would negate the need to walking long distances to fetch water – a task usually done by women and girls.
“We don’t want our school girls to come home from school and fetch water when they are supposed to study and do home work,” Maru said.
“We want to improve academic performance for girls and stop giving them unnecessary tasks like fetching water in the mornings and afternoons.”
Maru said the project would improve hygiene and sanitation in the village reduce the risk of diseases like diarrhoea and typhoid.
