CITY Pharmacy Limited (CPL) Group donated 2,800 water bottles and tents to the Southern Conference of the Women’s National Soccer League at Stop and Shop, Central Waigani, yesterday.
CPL managing director Sir Mahesh Patel said the presentation was only a small gesture to help players re-hydrate while playing in the humid conditions of Port Moresby.
“It is important for CPL to support women’s soccer as we have been wanting to do that for a very long time,” he said.
“We believe in all areas of development and sports are no different.
“We’ve supported the Papua New Guinea Lewas (national women’s cricket team), (Port Moresby Netball Association club) Rebels and other sports teams.
“Women’s soccer in PNG has already reached a milestone, the national women’s side are the champions of the Pacific.
“Hopefully, this level of competition will encourage more women to play soccer.”
Sir Mahesh said CPL’s partnership with the league and PNG Football Association (PNGFA) had only started and that he hoped the relationship would go a long way.
League interim committee member Christine Pakakota thanked CPL for the support.
“We thank CPL for coming on board to support the league and PNGFA in our efforts to make a difference in the country through football,” she said.
“We believe that our women can qualify for the 2023 Fifa World Cup and we hope for your support to go a long way.”
The league kicked off in Port Moresby and Lae last week, with 14 teams vying for the top-two playoff spots in the northern and southern conferences.
The northern and southern conferences have eight and six teams respectively.
