THE start of a sugarcane conveyor marked the start of the 2020 Ramu Sugar production last Tuesday.
Ramu Agri Industries Ltd (Rail) general manager Ruari Macwilliam said it was good that production resumed.
“This represents all the hard work by the agriculture team in growing and nurturing the sugar cane that will soon be processed into PNG’s very own No.1 selling Ramu Sugar,” Macwilliam said.
“I would like to thank all the Rail workers, all the teams that contribute to produce the range of products in a sustainable and environmentally safe manner. “The harvest for the year already looks like it will be a very good one.
“The sugar cane in the fields look healthy and strong despite the weather patterns.”
Head of technical services Eric Wise said: “Despite the Covid-19 threat, Rail has started production as per the scheduled date.”
Wise said sugar production contributes to the country’s economy and addresses food security.
“If food can be produced here in PNG, it reduces the dependence on imports and helps to keep the Kina in PNG,” he said.
