TEACHERS and students from Wardstrip Primary School are now enjoying the benefits of new desks, tables and chairs, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Port Moresby in conjunction with FinCorp.
Last Saturday, head teacher Sussie Uri received 150 desks, 33 tables and 150 chairs.
Uri told The National that the donation was fitting for Wardstrip which was one of the biggest schools in the National Capital District with over 3,000 students and 52 teachers.
She said the desks, tables and chairs had been distributed among the classes from grades eight to three as well as the head of grades and the e-library.
Uri said with the tuition fee free education policy, the enrolment had increased.
She said as a result a lot of students did not have desks and chairs.
“It’s been a big burden for us and we are grateful to the Rotary Club and FinCorp for coming to our aid,” she said.
Grade 8G teacher Dobby Yapi said there had been a shortage of desks and chairs due to the increased number of students and the donation was appreciated.
“We are very happy with the kind donations and it will go a long way in helping our students and teachers in their work.”
FinCorp chief executive officer Tony Witham also provided 10 44–gallon drums to be used as rubbish bins.
Rotary Club president Lavania Gangloff said they were pleased to assist schools.
She said the Rotary Club had five shipping 40ft containers of goods including school desks and chairs, hospitals beds, wheelchairs, bed linen, school books and medical supplies including nine emergency defibrillators for the Geruhu General Hospital and the St John Ambulance Service.
