THE annual Kaip Nokopa touch and volleyball competition in Jiwaka ended with grand finals on Sunday.
The competition staged at Kaip village in the Anglimp-South Wahgi saw youths from Kaip and neighbouring communities like Wurup and Polga take part.
The competition is an initiative of the Nokopa tribe for the benefit of its youth.
The competition was established in 2012.
Twelve teams — six men’s tough teams and six women’s volleyball teams — took part.
Last year’s competition was sponsored by Elvis Mara, Joe Pandia, Gilbert Paraka, Glen Willie and Jacob Koma.
In the men’s touch final, NPS Tigers beat Kum Sparks Warriors 6-4 to claim the title while NPS Tigers beat Blood Orchids 3-1 in the women’s volleyball final.
Competition president Paul Timbi said games usually started in October and ended this month.
He said the purpose of the competition was to get the young people and students involved in sports and keep them away from trouble during the holiday period.
Long-time sponsor Mara said the three areas that were promoted during the competition were God, education and sports.
He pledged K1,000 to the competition when it started again in October. Koma congratulated the participating teams and the community at Kaip for their cooperation and support.
