THE Saint Mary’s Asitavi High School in Bougainville has had its library fitted with computers by the Mineral Resources Authority.

The authority last Wednesday donated computers to the only “all-girls” high school in the Wakunai district of Central Bougainville.

The items comprised four desktop computer sets, four power supply units, a printer and four printing cartridges.

The four computers sets were fully kitted with Microsoft office programmess and anti-virus software.

Central Bougainville MP and Minister for Information and Communications Jimmy Miringtoro made the request for the computers.

The authority’s executive manager for corporate services Lien William said the donation was part of the authority’s corporate social responsibilities as a government organisation.

She said PNG depended on the Autonomous Region of Bougainville for its revenue from the Panguna mine after independence until the ’80s when the civil war broke out resulting in the closure of the mine.

She said it was only fitting that the authority, as the regulator for the mining industry, assisted the school and donating computers meant an additional resource for the students.

The school’s principal Elaine Baris expressed gratitude for the gift for the school that was established in 1956 and was forced to close down in 1989 during the height of the Bougainville crisis.

It was reopened in 1992 and has more than 300 students.
