Concern for animals hit by disease

Agriculture and Livestock Minister Benny Allen says that he is concern about reports of a mysterious disease affecting animals in West Sepik.
“I have not yet got an official report from my department but such report of worms found in animals is frightening,” he said.
“As this is a serious report, I will find out from the National Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority (Naqia) officers and will let you know (today).”
West Sepik Governor Tony Wouwou said worms were found in animals in Bewani and wanted Naqia officers to investigate it.
Wouwou was concerned that the problem would spread if it was not contained in Bewani to other villages and urged the department to respond to disease. Meanwhile, Allen said his Secretary Dr Vele Pat Ila’ava’s term would lapse next month.
“His position will be advertised this week,” he said.
Allen said they had finalised Oil Palm Industry Corporation (Opic) and Cocoa Board members.
“We just have to consult with our stakeholders before we bring it to Cabinet,” he said.
“We will review our Acts that govern Opic, cocoa, coffee, rubber and other commodities. These Acts are out of date now.”
Karamui-Salt-Nomane MP Geoffrey Kama was concerned that because Ila’ava was facing court on official corruption charges, it would hamper the disbursement of funds for agriculture projects in his electorate.
