Concern raised over building

A CONCERN has been raised by Lae city Lord Mayor and city authority chairman James Khay regarding the newly-constructed buildings at Angau Memorial Hospital.
Khay described the buildings as sheds or warehouses for storage and was not what a modern hospital building should look like.
“I drove in there one time late last year and saw those structures and thought they were just temporary structures for storage purposes, without knowing that those were actual structures built to stay,” Khay said.
The Angau redevelopment project is funded by the governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea. He said millions of kina was spent on the project but the structures erected did not look up to the standard expected.
“I disagree with the type of buildings as it is not looking good to be built, especially for such an urban centre like Lae,” he said.
Khay said the buildings looked cheap and had reservations about their quality.
Khay said Angau executive officer Grant Muddle needed to come out and explain why the structures were the way they were. The new structures will accommodate TB, labour, gynaecology wards, offices and other units at Angau hospital.
“This is AusAid money and something good should come out of the millions of kina provided by the Australian government.”
Muddle could not be reached for comment as he was out of the province.

  • Agree with this statement. Even the car park designed and in use cannot cater for enough vehicles.
Looks cheap and someone has to investigate the project worth the AUSAID funding.

  • I do agree about it all being for Lae otherwise most buildings that have been erected around the city for commercial purposes and so fort must be properly scrutinized to standards also as Mr. J.Khay has commented. .
