Prime Minister James Marape yesterday described the late Education Minister Jimmy Uguro as “one of my good ministers”.
In his condolence message, Marape said: “I take this time to acknowledge his work, his exemplary work ethic, his passion and zeal to drive education, especially Flexible and Open Distance Education, of which he himself was a product.
“To continue his own education, Uguro re-entered the system after finishing Grade 10. He matriculated and went to college to become an educationist. As an educationist and having seen the value of Fode, Minister Uguro pushed hard to have Fode integrated into our schools and properly operational to cater to our young people pushed out from the school system. He was also focused on our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students receiving specialised training overseas to expand this field and was instrumental in getting some of this work going as part of the reforms we are undertaking to restructure the education system.”
Late Uguro was Member for Usino-Bundi and also a loyal member of the Prime Minister’s Pangu Pati.
“He was a very senior member (of the party); one of our loyalists who started the movement to form government in 2019,”Marape said.
“I extend my deep condolences to his family and relatives, his clan and tribe, friends and those close to him.
He was on duty travel to East Sepik when he passed away.
Marape said the Government would ensure the late Member was given due respect as accorded to a minister of State, and that he was properly farewelled on his way to his resting place.
Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas who was away on medical attention overseas said he was sad to hear of the passing of a colleague.
“He (Uguro) was a very committed and hardworking minister who had a genuine heart for all children of PNG.
“He wanted the best for them. We in Enga are at loss as he was working very closely with us in education,” Sir Peter said.
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird said: “The people of ESP are deeply saddened at the unexpected passing of Jimmy Uguro in Wewak early this (yesterday) morning. Uguro was a very hard working minister and was on duty travel to our province. On behalf of the Sepik people, we extend our deepest condolences to the people of Usino Bundi, the people of Madang and to his loving family.”
