Consider home loans: Union

National, Normal

THE 4,000-strong PNG Maritime and Transport Workers Union was the first union to greet the announcement with joy.
Union general secretary John Mahuk said last night the Nasfund board and management should be congratulated for the double-digit dividend that his members and other Nasfund contributors would be getting.
Mr Mahuk, whose union is currently locked in a pay increase dispute with ship owners, said while the 15% dividend was welcome news, many contributors still could not afford decent housing.
He called on Nasfund to consider affordable housing for workers, adding that the majority who contributed were not on lucrative entitlements.
Making reference to Nasfund’s 8-Mile and 9-Mile housing estates, Mr Mahuk said these were good incentives for new home buyers but not all workers could afford the prices of these homes.
