THE second stage of concrete pouring for the walls of two cancer bunkers of the Port Moresby General Hospital’s (PMGH) new cancer facility was done last Sunday, a hospital executive says.
PMGH chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi said the specialised concrete which met international standards for cancer bunkers was shipped in from Australia.
He said the builders, Cimex & Constructions Ltd and Monier, were contracted for the concrete mixing and 616.5 cubic meters of concrete, using two concrete pumps, were poured from 5.30am to 5pm.
“The entire cancer facility was designed to meet international standards to provide modern cancer services to the people of PNG,” Dr Molumi said.
“We are working on delivering a modern comprehensive cancer centre which will house two latest linear accelerators for radiotherapy, a bracheotheraphy, 15-beds chemotherapy unit and nuclear medicine department with a Pet (positron emission tomography) scan.
He said the treatment centre would be on the ground floor while facilities for immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnosis which were vital to guide cancer treatments would be on top.
“The centre will be a one stop shop in prevention programmes, early diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, cancer registry, research and clinical trials,” Dr Molumi said.
