THE Papua New Guinea Consulate in Jayapura is trying to find out if any PNG citizens were affected by the flooding in Papua province.
Consul-General Colonel Geoffrey Wiri is in contact with the Indonesian disaster and relief agencies. He said flooding at Sentani near Jayapura City affected the Doyo Prison where at least 60 Papua New Guinea citizens were imprisoned.
Some PNG students are also attending the Seventh-day Adventist Church-run Doyo Boarding Secondary School.
He could not confirm whether a PNG prisoner had escaped from Doyo prison during last week’s floods.
“I’m only aware that the death toll went up (to over 100) and my staff are in touch with Indonesian officials to find out if any of our people are in that list.”
Meanwhile, sources at Doyo prison said two prisoners escaped during the floods when prison officers were busy moving equipment to higher grounds.
