Contractor building isolation shelter for prison

A CONTRACTOR is working on building temporary shelters for isolation purposes at Buimo prison in Lae to accommodate new prisoners before being admitted in the main compound, according to an official.
Buimo commander Chief Supt Michael Wundia said the contractor was reshaping nine containers to be placed at the prison as an isolation centre for newcomers.
“This is to address the strict Covid-19 protocols that we have in place at the prison,” Chief Supt Wundia said.
He said the contractor would build those containers to a standard which would be fit for human occupation and kept in the prison vicinity.
“These will be the place for those new convicts and those on remand in the prison,” he said.
“They will be kept in there for 14 days before being released into the main prison compound.”
Chief Supt Wundia explained that the approach taken at the CS compound was to avoid infections of the Covid-19 within the CS community.
He thanked the Lae district development authority and Lae City Authority for the donation of the two vehicles last Thursday, stating that the vehicles would go towards meeting all the areas of need at the prison.
