WORKS Minister Michael Nali says contractors working on the K3 billion rehabilitation of the Highlands Highway have been warned to pull up their socks or they’ll be replaced.
Responding to questions from Jiwaka Governor William Tongamp in Parliament yesterday on the status of the project, Nali said phase one of the rehabilitation work was progressing but not as expected.
The project to be implemented in three phases was funded through an Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan.
The three major contractors are the Metallurgical Corporation of China Ltd (MCCL) responsible for the road from Nadzab, Morobe to Henganofi, Eastern Highlands, China Wu Yi Ltd in charge of the section from Henganofi to Magiro, Chimbu and China Engineering Company Ltd (Chec) responsible for Magero bridge to Jiwaka.
Meanwhile, China Wu Yi Ltd is also responsible for the section from Niunde to Kagamuga, Western Highlands.
“We are aware of the status of the project,” Nali said.
“We went to the contractors on site two weeks ago and have warned them to pull their socks up.
“If they don’t then we will be forced to make some decisions and that is to give certain sections away to some of our major contractors within the country so that we can meet certain targets.”

  • You people want Chinese quality work so you have all sections to the Chinese friends. It will take only less than two years after the completion of their that our road will be on its normal Pottholes riddles state. So no worries. Look north igo na kantri ino go het liklik. Why not for instance giving the Simbu section to KaiaWorks or Simbu. They have done quality works wherever they had to work on. It’s sad that good local companies are overlooked for friends from China are are only interested in the money and not quality services.
