THE installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at Top Town in Lae, Morobe, recently has resulted in more than 10 arrest so far, acting Lae Met Supt Chris Kunyanban.
Met Supt Kunyanban told The National that the CCTV installation was a valuable project the constabulary had embarked on after former Met Supt Anthony Wagambie Jr initiated it.
“We want to complement what the former Met Supt (Wagambie Jnr) did with the technology as we all know that today, around the world, many crimes are captured on CCTV cameras,” he said.
“An example was a murder committed at 8th Street, through CCTV from the shops, the suspect was identified and we are looking at installing CCTV cameras to complement police work,” he said.
“We have seen it as important so we are installing CCTV cameras in town while at Lae Market, the friends of police (Chinese community) had installed a camera in the vicinity which has seen a reduction in petty crimes.”
Met Supt Kunyanban said the Lae market CCTV camera would transmit footage to the main communication system at the Lae Metro command where it will be monitored.
He said with CCTV cameras installed at targeted public areas, crimes including harassment as well as unauthorised street sales has decreased.
“Those caught on camera breaking laws or committing other offences had been identified and arrested using CCTV footage,” he said, adding that more than 10 arrests were made so far.
