A POLICE constable attached with Gordon Police Station in Port Moresby is fighting for his life at the Port Moresby General Hospital’s intensive care unit after being attacked by street vendors at Gordon bus stop yesterday (Thursday).
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika confirmed the incident and named the policeman as Constable Neiman Oiye.
Sika said the cause of the attack was yet to be established but police had ordered the vendors outside of Gordon main market to stop illegal sales at the bus stop.
He said the shops were also closed and the people were ordered to go home.
“I had given instructions to zone three commanders to make sure the bus stop was cleared,” he said.
“It is an unfortunate situation and I am not happy with what happened to one of my policemen.
“An investigation will be conducted and those identified will be dealt with accordingly.
“The police officers are now monitoring the Gordon area.
“We want to clean up the city and we want the public to respect what we are doing.
“Please respect police officers.”
In a press conference last week, Assistant Commissioner of Police for NCD/Central Anthony Wagambie Jnr urged people to respect the rule of law and also respect the police when they were doing their jobs.
Wagambie further stressed on the influx of people coming into the city that had made policing difficult.
He said their challenge was dealing with law breakers.
