Quick response by Mt Hagen police prevented a sorcery-related killing on Sunday morning.
A woman, 60, from Laiagam in Enga, was tortured by fellow Engans, who accused her of practising sorcery and killing a man from Enga.
She was being tortured by the relatives of the dead man when police intervened and saved her.
Relatives of the man, who lived in the same settlement at New Town as the woman, accused her of removing his heart which resulted in his death.
They claimed the man, before dying, told them that the woman had killed him. After he died, they held the woman captive in a house and ordered her to replace his heart.
They then made a big fire to burn her alive when police rescued her.
Mt Hagen police station commander John Maguna convinced the relatives of the dead man to release her.
He told them that police would not allow them to take law into their own hands.
Maguna told them that it was against the law to take one’s life.
The relatives, after lengthy discussions, reluctantly released her for police to take her to hospital.
It was agreed that after the woman was treated for her wounds, she would be taken into police custody.
