THE Christmas programme at Jack Pidik Park will continue and more police officers will be deployed to ensure opportunists do not take advantage of people, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says.
Parkop told The National that he had received complaints about petty crime at the park.
His committee will discuss measures to ensure people are safe.
“The purpose of the programme is for our people to celebrate the festivities in the true spirit of Christmas,” Parkop said.
“It’s been going well for all these years.
“Its only last year and this year that some rogue elements have taken advantage of the situation and trying to continue the bad activities of theirs.
“We will do our best to deal with it, but if it doesn’t improve, we might as well make a decision to close it down.
“But I am reluctant to do that because I don’t want us to give in to a few people who are going to dictate how we conduct ourselves between Christmas and New Year.”
Met Supt Benjamin Turi said there would be heavy police presence at the park to ensure the festivities continued smoothly and safely.
