Cops warned not to escort politicians

POLICE personnel caught escorting politicians in an unofficial capacity will be severely dealt with, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Border Command Peter Philip.
“No policemen should be privately escorting any politician or intending candidate,” he said.
“Police will be deployed after the official issue of writs (on April 28) and it is wrong for police to escort political parties and candidates during their campaign.
“Policemen escorting politicians for early campaigns or (other) political activities should be warned that (they would) face penalties when caught.
“I will suspend police officers who do not follow these instructions.
“They will not be participating during the elections.”
He said in the past, some policemen were paid by politicians to provide escort for them during the election period which was “unbecoming”.
“Policemen have a duty to protect citizens and not privately escorting politicians during their political activities.”
