THE Prime Minister’s Corporate Golf Challenge in Port Moresby on Friday recorded its highest number of teams in the event’s 22-year history with 57 teams.
During the event’s closing at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club, Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) president Sir John Dawanicura praised the support of sponsors and corporate bodies despite the challenges faced by the country this year.
“We’ve had the event for 22 years and this year’s number of 57 teams is a record,” he said of the PNGOC-organised event, of which The National is a major sponsor.
“Despite the challenges amid the Covid-19 pandemic, our athletes are training.
“Some are overseas and the rest are (at the National Sports Institute) in Goroka.
“We have 12 targeted sports for the Olympics.
“The Olympics are the pinnacle of every athlete’s sporting career and their dream to represent their respective countries.
“We’d like to take this moment to thank The National for being a major sponsor.
“The biggest thank you is to all of our sponsors, especially our corporate sponsors.
“Without them, it wouldn’t have happened.”
Prime Minister James Marape, while congratulating PNGOC on a successful staging of the annual challenge, said the support from corporate sponsors had shown confidence in the government’s efforts to restore normalcy. This event would not have been possible without those who’ve decided to field a team,” he said.
“We never thought that in a hard year where Covid-19 hit us that we try to return to normalcy at the very earliest and we’re very happy to see all regular companies back for the challenge.
“From the outset, thank you to all the corporate sponsors, players and teams who’ve rallied behind a worthy cause again this year.”
