The PNG Bodybuilding Federation announced yesterday that its 27th national championships will be held at the Cosmopolitan nightclub in Port Moresby on June 8-9.
The championships will be hosted by NCD Bodybuilding Association.
Vice-president of the PNGBBF Jacob Kom, speaking on behalf of president Steven Bomal, said bodybuilding was a gold-medal winning code for PNG at international events over the years including the 2015 Pacific Games.
“This championships is the only opportunity to find the best bodybuilders in each category and place them into a development squad to eventually representing the country at the elite level” Kom said.
“During the 7th PNG Games in Kimbe we have identified new talents and encouraged all the provinces in the country to add bodybuilding to their list of sporting codes.
“All will be vying for the Mr PNG and Ms PNG titles. NDC-based Lucas Wemin is the current Mr PNG and Goroka’s Misah Avefa is the current Ms PNG.
“In June both titles will be up for grabs once more.”
The weight divisions at the national championships range from 65kg to 90kg-plus. A total of 70 competitors are expected to compete.
Kom said the goal of PNGBBF was to establish the sport of bodybuilding in all provinces of the country, identify potential athletes and provide them with proper support and opportunities to represent the country.
PNGBF hopes to introduce bodybuilding to the Southern Highlands province so the host province of the 8th PNG Games will be able to have its athletes participate during the games. Bodybuilding associations who are affiliated members to the PNGBBF and therefore eligible to participate in the national championships include NCD, Morobe, Goroka, Simbu, Jiwaka, West New Britain, East New Britain, AROB and Kutubu (Southern Highlands).
Kom thanked the general manager of the Cosmopolitan night club, Martin Sherry for agreeing to host the national championships at the venue.
He also acknowledged all other stakeholders and supporters for their assistance.
