THE LAE city council has engaged unemployed youths to keep the new-look cement streets clean.
Council health and sanitation manager Jonathan Ipang said:  “The youths will sweep the streets, cut grass at the road sides, and join street beautification in the Top Town, Eriku and main market areas.”
Ipang said the youths had been issued with uniforms and identification cards.
“Issuing uniforms and identification cards will ensure that these youths are clearly visible and stand apart,” he said.
Ipang said interested women’s groups would be engaged in the city’s upkeep as well.
“To keep the city clean is the responsibility of the general public who must drop rubbish in the disposal bins provided.”
Ipang said the city management would be tougher by imposing spot fine penalties where it was necessary to prevent people from littering.
