The people of Nabual ward in Kokopo’s Duke of York local level government in East New Britain have been urged to be self-reliant instead of waiting for government support.
Ward member Ben Mobea said this during the commissioning of the ward’s newly built community hall on Saturday.
Mobea said the project was initiated by the community in 2019 who planned and raised the funds.
He said they collected K6,500 and used it to build the foundation.
Mobea said the main source of revenue which supported the project was the selling of fish at the Kokopo main market.
He said the community was supportive and committed as the project was for everyone’s benefit.
“I took this decision to work with my people and build our community hall because for the last 50 years our leaders, current and past, have been conducting their meetings and gatherings under trees.
“I saw this as a big need for us to build the community hall so we can conduct meetings in it.”
Mobea said construction started in 2020 but due to shortage of funds they were not able to complete the building.
He said To Brat Trading gave more than K90,000 worth of materials. He also thanked other contributors.
