Country needs good governance, leadership

A MODERN economy is an intricate network of complex interactions between domestic and foreign economic agents, which serves the needs and improves the quality of life of its population.
Economic agents of change are organisations, individuals and governments.
They interact with one another in this network to produce and distribute goods and services for consumption in the domestic economy and the rest of the world.
Their interaction, through the supply and demand chain, then brings about this positive change in the communities, towns, cities and the country as a whole.
During the commemoration day of Dr Martin Luther King, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank and now secretary for the United States department of treasury, Janet Yellen, made a bold statement, which was captured and reported around the world by the media.
In her statement, she reckoned that the modern economy of the United States (US) was not meant for the Black world.
She was referring to the black community in the US.
However, note that her statement is equally true for the rest of the black and coloured world.
Migration from the black and colour regions of Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean to North America and Western Europe, is a clear manifestation of her statement.
The migrants are seeking a better life in the Western world.
The economies back home are not meant to serve their needs.
A lack of strong will and determination to embrace and adhere to good leadership, governance and management standards and practices is the root cause of the downfall of economies of the entire black world.
It has triggered this massive black migration to the West in search of a better life.
The same root cause has created a similar problem of different dimensions here in Papua New Guinea.
The quality of services such as health, education, infrastructure, public utilities and transportation have all deteriorated and contributed to the high cost of doing business, resulting in a high level of unemployment in PNG.
Unemployment is causing all sorts of social problems.
The black migration to the West serves as a serious reminder to PNG to adopt and implement standards and practices that foster good leadership, governance and management for the benefit of its people.
