FORMER army officer Yaura Sasa has been cleared of mutiny charges against him because police did not provide sufficient evidence.
The committal court in Waigani was satisfied with the arguments submitted by Sasa’s lawyer Tony Waisi to dismiss the charge because Sasa did not commit the offence.
Waisi said in a statement that the court upheld his application and dismissed the mutiny charges against his client.
Police prosecutors could not be reached for  comment yesterday.
Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga could not be reached for comment as well.
National Capital District police operations Supt Andy Bawa could not comment on the case as he was busy with the election counting last night.
Sasa faced mutiny charges over allegations that he incited soldiers serving in the 1RPIR at Taurama Barracks in January  to commit a mutinous act.
The court heard that on Jan 26 this year, Sasa led a group of armed soldiers into Murray Barracks and placed the PNG Defence Force commander brigadier general Francis Agwi under house arrest.
