A MAN has been fined K300 and placed on a six-month good behaviour bond for assaulting his wife on Independence Day last week.
Michael Gire, 29, of Amban village in Daru, Western, admitted the offence before Lae District Court Magistrate Isaac Tjipet.
Police said on Sept 16 at around 1.45am, Gire went to his wife at 3-Mile in Lae and asked her to share his salary with his second wife who was pregnant and lives at Leron. Pupun refused which led to an argument.
Police prosecutor Const Deilynne Kiungu told the court that Gire was an abusive person who had previously assaulted his wife.
He said they were in an abusive relationship and asked the court for a penalty that would be a deterrent not only to him but also other like-minded offenders.
Gire will spend six months in prison if he breaches the conditions set by the court.

  • I think 300 kina is too lenient. Increase it to 1,000 kina to deter this type of offence if PNG is serious about addressing domestic violence. Otherwise, we will definitely see more of it happening.

  • Isn’t there a law for INSTIGATORS OR trouble makers?
You don’t need to be a Brainiac to figure out who the instigator is in this incident…
