THE University of PNG has been told to allow 13 student leaders an extension of time in Semester One to submit their assignments and sit for examinations.
The National Court in Waigani ordered the extension of time because the student leaders had missed out on classes and submitting their assignments when the university banned them from campus.
The order was granted last Friday by Justice Leka Nablu following an application by their lawyer Ramsey Pariwa.
The interim stay order and restraining order granted by the court on Sept 23 and Oct 6 in the two respective judicial review applications have been discharged.
The court discharged the interim orders because the university had re-registered the student leaders.
The re-registration of the student leaders was made following a decision of the council student appeals committee on Oct 6 which quashed the decision of the university to permanently exclude the student leaders.
The student leaders were members of the Student Representative Council when the university permanently excluded them on Aug 9 from the university.
There were 25 student leaders who were terminated. This was because their involvement in a protest and unrest at the university over eight weeks in June and July were detrimental to the interest of the university.
