TWO coronavirus suspects, both Australian citizens have been quarantined for 14 days after allegedly crossing the PNG-Indonesian border illegally into West Sepik, provincial Magistrate Sasa Inkung says.
“The Australian High Commission and West Sepik provincial authority are now observing them at a lodge outside Vanimo town after the Vanimo District Court ordered that they be quarantined for 14 days,” he said. “The court also ordered that they must be isolated from the public and that the provincial health authority has to clear them before they appear before the court on March 25 with charges of illegal entry.”
Magistrate Inkung said yesterday that Sam Roem, 31, and Yoshua Roem, 27, were originally from Jayapura City, West Papua but were now Australian citizens.
“They appeared before the court today (Monday) and are now out on police bail. They were charged by police with illegal entry after arriving on a boat at Waromo village last Thursday without immigration documents.
“Due to the coronavirus awareness, the public is now on alert for any one crossing into West Sepik and have reported them to the police resulting in their arrest.
They are also suspected to have illegally crossed the border into Indonesia in December after arriving in Vanimo from Australia via Port Moresby,” Magistrate Inkung said.
Meanwhile, a West Papuan and West Sepik men have been sentenced to two years jail for attempting to smuggle marijuana into Jayapura.
Allan Warom, 28 , from Serui Island, West Papua, Indonesia and Philip John, 25 , from Sisiano, Aitape, West Sepik and Denis Mambo, 20, from Biam Island, Wewak, East Sepik, were caught with compressed marijuana and vanilla beans in their dinghy.

  • Please make sure that Covid 29 virus doesn’t spread other people in PNG..if it spread just imagine what will happen next considering the fact that our health system and preparation is not up to standard

  • If this two idiots are quarantined, why are we keeping them in a lodge? They don’t deserve such a treat. Send them back straight to Indonesia and they can deal with them. Useless human beings!!

  • Its has been a huge mistake taken by the government for lack of survilliance to strickly monitor wutong borders. Yupla olsem wanem? The villages along the coast toward border has to take this message seriously and play your responsibility not to accept strangers. This is another country and whoever accepts such people should also be quareentined together with those two. Who knows if they were happen to have the virus then all those involved liasing with these two might also caught the virus. Well wait and see after 14 days. Yupla noken longlong na paul nabout our health measures are of very low standards while USA as a great nation still would not prove its capabilities to contain this virus. Sapos umi longlong em bai i sore na sore stret long yumi. All our graves would be open by then.

  • Our Health Department needs to up their game by shuting down the borders and quarantining everyone coming into the country for 14days before allowing them into thd country. We are not showing that we are serious about COVID 19, its all talk. Take America, Iran, India for example..the land borders need to be secured otherwise within weeks it blow out. DOH needs to show that they are very serious and we need to start practicing washing hands etc etc

  • The true people of God will stand on that day. The only help we can get is from God . The mighty ruler.

  • When is the government gonna do something about this? we dont have necessary infrustrusture in place to combat this deadly virus…..toktok tasol. Jacksons airport still open for business, these two flew through pom and went up. Wake up! or should we wait till one dies then we’ll start to react… Come on! prevention is better then cure

  • Government seems to be sleeping so every single human being living in all cities and Towns rally support with our Defence ,Police ,CIS and Doctors plus students ,let’s all stage Demonstrations to petition Government….both National and Provincial and wer possible man the Airports ,seaports and those in coastal area villages also put up local community security to look out for any illegal immigrants from overseas….
