YOUNG primary school-aged girls in the Yelia LLG of Obura-Wonenara, Eastern Highlands, will be receiving 50 bodycare product packs from Care International on behalf of City Pharmacy Ltd (CPL) Foundation.
The CPL outlet in Goroka made this presentation on Monday to a non-government organisation which will be making a trip to the rural Eastern Highlands district next month.
According to Care International senior project officer Betty Hinamunimo, the donation would come under leadership training for women and girls in Yelia LLG.
“This is the second time for us to receive such support from a corporate organisation like CPL,” she said.
“The first of such support we received was in 2017 from Colgate, where we also donated to girls in the remote areas of Obura-Wonenara.
“We see that these products as a real need for young girls in rural areas.
“Most of them do not have access to such products.
“Many times they do not attend school when they’re having their menstruation period, thus, such body care products will help them.”
CPL Foundation project co-ordinator Oti Sarufa said the donation was part of the CPL Foundation’s programme of giving back to the communities.
“This is the 12th year since the programme started,” she said.
“We have been focused on empowering women.
“We share a common vision with such organisations like Care International. “
Sarufa said the CPL Foundation was inspired to make this donation become a reality after finding out that a former CPL Pride of PNG Women’s Award winners of 2015 in the category of Young Women, Delisha Koime Liri, was now working with Care International and engaged in helping empower young women in rural areas of Eastern Highlands.
Care International in PNG, under the Better Governance for Education Project (BG4E), has been working in Obura-Wonenara on both governance and community development initiatives in the last three years.
Obura-Wonenara is one the most remote areas of the Eastern Highlands.
It is not accessible by road and services such as health and education are either run down or non-existent.
