CPO only allowed at political camps: Police

CLOSE Protections Officers (CPO) are the only police personnel authorised to be at the political camps in Port Moresby, NCD and Central commander Donald Yamasombi says.
Yamasombi told The National that police officers’ mandated duty was to provide public safety and not offer private escorts to MPs.
“The only two persons entitled to having police escorts is the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Opposition Leader Patrick Pruaitch,” Yamasombi said.
“So the only officers seen at these camps are the CPOs, any other police officers seen at these camps or reported to be there will be asked to explain why and may face disciplinary action.
“Police are advised to maintain public safety in the city and remain neutral during the lead-up to when parliament next sits on May 28,” he said.
Yamasombi also commended the officers on their great performance during the parliament sitting on Tuesday.
“I thank my officers for ensuring and providing public safety and at the same time ensuring that there was no disturbance during the sitting,” Yamasombi said.
“I also thank the public and commend the citizens for working with the police, as there was no disturbance or nuisance at that time.”
