MUD crab sellers from Kikori in Gulf say crabs have the potential to enable them earn a good living in Port Moresby despite the long journey from home.
They spend about K500 to travel to Port Moresby by boat and truck and return with about K3,000.
Aaron Job, who has been selling crabs in Port Moresby for two years, said it was good business.
“We come from our village in to Kerema town on a dinghy and pay K250 per passenger and K25 for a 20kg bag of crabs,” he explained.
“And then we pay K80 PMV fare to Port Moresby and K4 per bag.
“Now, I brought 10 bags and it cost me a total of K800 to come to Port Moresby.
“But I don’t mind.
“We fetch good money from selling crabs, especially at Koki Market. We also sell them to overseas buyers in Port Moresby.”
“These foreigners know us and buy our crabs when we arrive at their shops.” Job said that they stayed with relatives in Port Moresby and returned to Kikori to harvest more in their mangroves.
“Selling crabs is helping us contribute to the local economy, especially back home in Kikori and Gulf.”
