INFORMATION from Ramu NiCo Management Ltd shows that the US$2.1bn (K5.6bn) nickel-cobalt project in Madang has created significant employment opportunity for locals since its inception.

The company’s human resource division said in the first three months of this year, a total of around 600 citizens were employed.

The figure covered the three sites at Ramu NiCo’s Madang base, Kurumbukari mine and the refinery at Basamuk.

Business development officer Brodney Seip said: “Though many local people are directly employed by MCC-Ramu NiCo, a good number of people are employed by landowner companies.”
