Cricket gives Aporo his first chance to travel overseas

Malcolm Aporo

JUST like most of his Under-19 national teammates, this will be Malcolm Aporo’s first time leaving the shores of Papua New Guinea — a highlight for the batsman.
The 18-year-old, from Hula, Central, has already made his presence known on the pitch.
What started as a fun backyard game with his friends is now a lifetime opportunity where Aporo will represent his country, after being scouted from the well-known Raukele club.
“I’m excited because this is my first (World Cup) tour,” he said.
There is so much to gain from a World Cup tour, from networking to experiencing different cultures.
But what Aporo anticipates most is watching and learning from the other international teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
“I just want to get experiences from other countries, especially from their batting and bowling techniques,” he said.
That is something Aporo looks at in other players he aspires to be like, especially in the Kumul Petroleum PNG Barramundis.
“My favourite player is Tony Ura because I love his shots and fielding,” he said.
Being young it is only right to absorb how other players perform on the field — and even on the court.
Interestingly, volleyball is another game that Aporo enjoys playing when he is off the field.
“I love playing volleyball,” the Garamuts squad member said.
When asked how training was coming along, Aporo said preparations were going well, adding that they were ready to take on other international teams in the West Indies next year.
The Rigo native said he would miss home, especially his family, while on tour.
But Aporo said he was looking forward to making his debut on the international stage and hopefully tour with the Barramundis in the future.
