CRICKET Papua New Guinea’s selection process to finalise the men’s Under-19 team enters its next phase, as focus shifts to training matches this weekend for the 28-man train-on squad for the Garamuts.
The squad has been training since last Monday under head coach Jack Vare-Kavere and this weekend, they will be playing 50-over matches in Port Moresby’s Amini Park.
Kavere will continue the team’s training sessions over the next five weeks as they prepare for the ICC men’s U19 World Cup East Asia Pacific qualifiers in July.
They will select an 18-man squad that will be announced between April 15-19 before the final 14-man travelling squad is named in June prior to the team’s departure.
Meanwhile, the women’s U19 team, Siales are also well into their preparation to attend the women’s U19 World Cup EAP qualifiers in Bali, Indonesia from May 13-22.
Maha who is overseeing the identification of the team said there was a lot of talent shown with U19 players flying in from around PNG.
“(We had players) from Milne Bay, Lae, Kimbe and Central to join the majority from NCD which has the biggest cricket talent pool,” said Maha. “The coach of Siales, Mahuru Dai will make recommendations, as it is up to the coaches to look at the team makeup, for example, if they want more bowlers (or batters).
