Crime seen as big obstacle to tourism

A BUSINESSMAN says the poor law and order situation in the Highlands is a hindrance to tourism and investment in the region.
Hagen Motel owner Michael Makap has been operating the motel for the past 17 years near Kagamuga Airport.
He said that he had noticed a decrease in business activity in the town because of criminal activities, with some businesses closing down.
Makap said the motel used to be fully booked by tourists when cultural were held in Mt Hagen, showing the potential tourism had in the Highlands region.
“If we address law and order, tourism has the potential to contribute hugely to the government’s revenue,” he said.
“Hagen is the hub of the highlands.
“We need good leadership to build infrastructure in Hagen and other provinces.
“Good infrastructure and an educated population will lead to development.”
He said the development of the Kagamuga Airport was a positive move to improve infrastructure and businesses in Mount Hagen and the Highlands.
